- Abstract
The article presents criticism of the 1861 short story "Ralph the Bailiff," by Mary Elizabeth Braddon which explores the use of accusations about women's mental health to protect and preserve power and status. Topics covered are the use of marriage by female servants to improve their social status as allowed by the 19th-century British custom, the characters and plot of the story and highlighting the use of madness to hide the truth.
