- Title
Correcting English Versions of the Qur'an: The Throne ('arsh) and the Footstool (Kursi) Controversy in 1902.
- Authors
Geaves, Ron
- Abstract
The article discusses a 1902 controversy surrounding a translation of a passage of the Qur'an in a du’a, or prayer of blessing, by English solicitor William Henry Quilliam, also known as Abdullah, in honor of the coronation of Edward VI, King of Great Britain. The controversy stemmed from Quilliam's use of the word "footstool," or "kursi," in his English-language translation, rather than "throne," or "‘arsh." Translations of the Qur'an by Alexander Ross and George Sale are considered. Quilliam's conversion to Islam is also discussed.
