- Title
SOME INDIAN DESIGN STYLES AND THEIR POSSIBLE ORIGINS.
- Authors
DOUGLAS, FREDERIC H.
- Abstract
The article explores possible origins for various design motifs in Native American artwork. Indigenous and European origins are explored for designs present in various forms of Native American art from across the U.S. Particular focus is given to the similarities between the semi-realistic floral and plant-based designs present in the beadwork of many Northern and Eastern tribes and French design. Comparisons between Navaho silverwork and Spanish stamped leatherwork are also drawn. The author suggests that angular designs based on Southwestern Indian basketry and Southeastern Indian art featuring curved lines are entirely native in origin.
