- Abstract
The common understanding in imperial History is that the Prussian-German military remained rather unimpressed by imperial desires outside Europe during the first half of the nineteenth century. This article argues instead for a longer continuity of military imperialism in the German armies before the foundation of a German nation state. It traces this early interest in imperial engagement by analysing three thus-far forgotten expeditions of Prussian officers to the Caucasian region. By using the concept of the «imperial cloud», it follows the remembrance of these undertakings and the careers of their participants to the end of the century, when this tradition was later used as a justification for colonial activities now carried out in Africa and Asia.
