- Abstract
This article presents information about noted Jamaican artist Christopher Gonzalez. Gonzalez was a graduate of the Jamaican School of Art in 1963. Gonzalez rejected the modernist aesthetics taught by Bill Broome and turned to the symbolism of sculptor Edna Manley. The article also describes the influence of Scandinavian artists on Gonzalez, especially Gustav Viegland. Some of Gonzalez's commissioned works for churches and the Jamaican government are described and some of his awards are mentioned. Gonzalez was also a noted oil painter and sculpted less after the rejection of his sculpture for a Bob Marley monument.
