- Title
THE WARP, WOOF, AND WEAVE OF THIS STORY'S TAPESTRY WOULD FOSTER THE ILLUSION OF FURTHER PROGRESS: JUSTIFIED AND THE EVOLUTION OF WESTERN VIOLENCE.
- Authors
Joyce, Justin A.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the evolution of violence in American westerns, with particular focus on the television shows "Justified" and "Deadwood." The author analyzes the 2008 U.S. Supreme Court Case District of Columbia v. Heller, in which the Second Amendment was upheld, in regards to the distinction between the U.S. legal system and the popular culture idea of the wild west. He claims that the western concept of justifiable homicide is historically linked to changes in the U.S. legal system, argues that the genre of western television shows represents private gun violence, and discusses the idea of a legal right to personal violence.
