- Title
Prominent Juvenile Judge Receives Spirit of Crazy Horse Award.
- Abstract
This article reports on the 2004 Spirit of Crazy Horse Award won by Judge Ernestine Gray of New Orleans, Louisiana in recognition of her outstanding contributions to reclaiming children and youth. Judge Gray has served as president of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges and has advocated for the needs of troubled children worldwide. She was recognized in a ceremony at Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota. This award is given annually by Reclaiming Youth International, a non-profit research and training institute providing resources for those who work with vulnerable and troubled children. The Spirit of Crazy Horse award is named for a young Lakota chief who courageously led his people in their times of greatest challenge. Crazy Horse is being memorialized in the largest stone carving in the world which has been 50 years in the making. He sits astride his horse in a monument taller than the pyramids. Crazy Horse Memorial also houses the Native American Museum of North America. Judge Gray joins a distinguished group of persons who have received the Spirit of Crazy Horse Award over the past decade. Recent recipients include John Calhoun, who founded the National Crime Prevention Council, Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, who transformed services to children in the new democratic South Africa and Professor Daniel Olweus of Norway, who is the world's leading expert on bully-proofing schools.
