The article demonstrates the fluorescence microscopy techniques for immediate detection and imaging of intracellular nitric oxide (NO). NO-responsive fluorophores have been developed wherein the fluorescence emission is NO reacts with Cu(II)-quenched fluorophore complexes. In the reaction, NO reduces the nonfluorescent Cu(II) to the brightly fluorescent Cu(I).
