- Authors
Grace, Jeremy; Fischer, Jeff
- Abstract
The article reports that United Nation's Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement and its Guiding Principle 22, which states that internally displaced people (IDP) have a right to vote and to participate in governmental and public affairs. According to the article, there is no universally accepted practice in protecting IDP voting rights, despite national governments' responsibility to do so. The obstacles in protecting IDP voting rights include discriminatory limitations, a lack of information about electoral processes, and alienation. The government programmes to include IDPs in voting processes since the development of the Guiding Principles in the year 1999 are discussed.
