Analyzing the Pure Case: Women's Narratives of Academic Life.
- Authors

- Abstract
This article examines the experiences of women in academia through an analysis of the narratives contained in the exit interviews of women leaving their current academic positions. The findings revealed negative experiences common to the women interviewed that contributed to their decisions to leave the institution, including sexual and gender harassment, underrepresentation/isolation of women, and inadequate and/or inaccurate feedback regarding performance. One image that emerges from these stories is one of women constantly defending themselves from attacks to their professional and personal self-esteem. The authors noted that the women portrayed in the narratives are not merely victims of male domination, they are survivors. These women displayed resourcefulness, perseverance, courage, humanity, and sense of humor. These stories of their experiences as women faculty will contribute to the culture of academia in general.
