- Abstract
A letter published in the journal Intensive Care Medicine discusses the mortality rates of patients with HIV/AIDS in intensive care units (ICUs). The study, conducted in France, matched 630 critically ill HIV/AIDS patients with non-HIV-infected patients and found that 60-day mortality was significantly lower in patients with HIV who did not have AIDS compared to those with AIDS and non-HIV-infected patients. The study suggests that patients with HIV who do not have AIDS should receive the same care as non-HIV-infected patients, while heightened awareness and efforts should be made for AIDS patients who have higher mortality rates. The study acknowledges limitations in its methodology and generalizability to low-income countries.
