- Abstract
The number of immunosuppressed individuals travelling is increasing. Mary Gawthrop explains the important points to consider when advising these travellers Immunosuppression is defined as the suppression of the body's immune system and its ability to fight infections and other diseases. The number of immunosuppressed individuals travelling is increasing. As practice nurses deliver the majority of travel health services in the UK, it is important that they are familiar with appropriate sources of advice. Immunosuppressed travellers should be aware that they are vulnerable to developing significant complications if they contract opportunistic infections while travelling. Practice nurses should have the confidence to seek advice from an immunosuppressed traveller's hospital specialist if appropriate, with the consent of the traveller.
