- Abstract
The article presents information on the heating options available in the middle school classrooms for conducting various laboratory activities. The guidelines for using the equipment safely are also given in the article. The only containers that one should heat for conducting the laboratory activities in schools should be made of borosilicate glass such as Pyrex. All other types of glass, including the soft glass used to make graduated cylinders, can crack and shatter when heated. One of the greatest dangers in heating liquids or gases is the buildup of pressure and the ensuing explosion. Therefore, one should use only open containers such as beakers and flasks with large openings, that allow vapors to vent freely. Use of a closed or nearly closed container can cause explosion. For heating purposes, there are several different heat sources that can be used depending on what is being heated. Some of them are hot plate, gas burners, alcohol burners, candles and hot water bath. The usage and safety measures of all the above mentioned heat sources are given in details in the article.
