- Abstract
Polymer composites of the following compositions (in wt.%) were obtained: low density polyethylene (PE-LD) — 24, high density polyethylene (PE-HD) — 23, polypropylene (PP) — 21, polystyrene (PS — 15, and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) — 17. The parts mentioned correspond to the compositions of polymer packaging wastes occurring in Poland. A compatibilizer, namely styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene elastomer grafted with maleic anhydride (SEBS-g-MA), was introduced into polymeric system in amounts of 5, 10 or 15 phr. The effects of compatibilizer part and electron radiation doses in the range 0—300 kGy on the following mechanical properties of the composites were studied: offset yield strength (σ02, Fig. 2), yield point (σy, Fig. 3), stress at break (σB, Fig. 4), unit elongation at yield point (ϵy, Fig. 5) and unit elongation at break (ϵB, Fig. 6). It was found that the most important features of the system, i.e. σ02 and σy, decreased with increasing part of SEBS-g-MA while the effect of radiation dose on these properties was not significant. The latter could result from the presence of aromatic rings in PS and PET, protecting the macromolecules against radiation.
