The Old Railroad Right-of-Way Challenge.
- Authors
Roman, Harry T.
- Abstract
This article explores the social concerns surrounding an old railroad line. It points out that this cast-off piece of land can now be viewed as a resource. It cites the characteristics of the land including the right-of-way that cuts across a large area and may connect cities and towns and a possible revenue source for the town or city it passes through. Another popular application for an abandoned rail line has been to remove the tracks and create hiking and bike trails for local citizens as a way to develop a more environmentally friendly area. It also cites some concerns over abandoned rail lines including how towns can obtain permission to use these rights-of-way and safety considerations. It describes an activity for students about possible uses for the land area.
