- Title
Humanitarian Performance and the Asian Tsunami.
- Authors
Thompson, James
- Abstract
The article presents a critique of the humanitarian response to the Asian tsunami which occurred on December 26, 2004. It states that 11 nations were impacted by the disaster which claimed 225,000 lives, and while the response was noble, they were politically motivated. It claims that the disaster had greater media coverage because of the number of foreigners present and the competition by aid agencies to address the problem. It states that humanitarian aid should be based on the needs of the victims, not those wishing to feel good about themselves.
