- Abstract
Introduction: The “Button Game” is a novel communication technique employed in the field of paediatric palliative care to facilitate self-expression and symptom assessment in children with life-limiting illnesses. This innovative approach involves the use of buttons as visual aids, representing various emotions, symptoms, and experiences that a child may be facing during their illness trajectory. Case Series: The four cases presented involve individuals with various serious illnesses, including acute leukemia, complex cyanotic heart disease, Ewing sarcoma and advanced pancreatic cancer. The Button Game was used to facilitate emotional expression, discussion of fears, hopes, and desires, and alleviate anxieties. In each case, the individual has difficulty in expressing their feelings but opened up after playing the game. The game helped build rapport and trust, allowing the individual to discuss their concerns and needs. Conclusion: By providing children with a set of buttons and prompting them to select the ones that best reflect their current state, this technique enables young patients to communicate their feelings and concerns when they may lack the verbal skills or confidence to do so. The Button Game is a valuable tool and serves as a resource for healthcare professionals by integrating creative and engaging techniques to enhance the ability health care providers to understand and address the unique needs and concerns of their young patients.
