- Abstract
The article "Trailblazers of German Democracy" discusses a publication by Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the current President of Germany, which deals with the remembrance of German democratic history. The book introduces a total of 30 trailblazers of democracy, divided into four sections. Steinmeier emphasizes that the culture of remembrance in Germany has long been neglected and that German history has often been reduced to the pursuit of national unity. He argues for a stronger remembrance of the freedom and democracy movements of the 19th century in order to restore the connection to European neighbors. In her contribution, historian Barbara Stollberg-Rillinger emphasizes the important role of the media in the democracy movement. The volume introduces various personalities of German democratic history, including women, and emphasizes their significance and the challenges they faced. However, criticism is raised that the development of the labor movement in the German Empire and the role of trade unions are neglected. The volume does not offer new scientific insights, but it fulfills the purpose of illustrating the long history and tradition of democratic movements in Germany.
