This essay reflects on the developments in the field of Native American history. The author provides a historical overview of the rise of Native American history as a specialized field of study within American history beginning in the late 1960s. He also tackles the development of several Native American studies programs and departments that also began in late 1960s. Moreover, he discusses the efforts to unite scholars in Native American studies program and traditional academic departments in United States.
