- Title
MAPS AND MINING OF COAL IN THE WOLLONGONG DISTRICT SINCE 1797.
- Authors
Young, R. W.
- Abstract
The discovery and mining of coal-bearing strata outcropping along the escarpment near Wollongong, on the coast south of Sydney, together with the consequent industrial growth and urban expansion, can be readily followed on maps of that district drawn over some 220 years. This review begins with geological maps ranging from the late 18th to the late 20th centuries, then with maps of mining and urban growth ranging from 1862 to 1974, and concludes with a recent map that summarises the increasing conflict between mining and conservation in the Sydney water catchment on the plateau west of the escarpment.
