- Title
MERIWETHER LEWIS'S LAND WARRANT: UNTIMELY REWARD.
- Authors
DANISI, THOMAS C.
- Abstract
The article considers the compensation given to the Corps of Discovery, the men involved in the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804 to 1806, by U.S. Congress in the spring of 1807. It focuses particularly on the land warrant for 1600 acres given to Meriwether Lewis to be taken from public lands located west of the Mississippi River. The land warrant could not be executed until the lands had been surveyed, which the U.S. government did not undertake until 1816. After the 1809 death of Lewis, his land warrants became the property of his mother, who petitioned Congress and received a bill of relief from the Committee of the Public Lands in 1828.
