- Abstract
The article focuses on the character of Edmund Mortimer in the drama of William Shakespeare. Edmund Mortimer, Earl of March and rightful heir to the throne of England, prisoner in his youth to Owen Glendower, and prisoner at his death to the House of Lancaster, is a tragic character, familiar to us from Shakespeare's history plays. This character is not invented by Shakespeare, but merely adopted from his chief source Holinshed's Chronicles. Shakespeare's young Mortimer follows, the lines set down by Holinshed.
