- Abstract
The article focuses on the book "Model As Motif in Tristram Shandy," by Fritz Gysin. His grasp of the proliferating critical literature about Tristram Shandy is adequate, although his bibliography regrettably fails to mention the Florida Edition of 1978 and any critical item after 1979. Likewise, his acquaintance with the British and Continental eighteenth-century sociocultural backgrounds ranges extensively from the controversy between ovists and animalculists to Captain Toby Shandy's and Corporal Trim's military services in the Nine Years' War (1688-97), even though his contextual references at times rather tend to blur the critical issues more than they put them into sharp focus, perhaps a mimetic consequence of the kaleidoscopic shifts of Shandean viewpoint.
