- Title
Fisher Ames and Equality.
- Authors
Hillbruner, Anthony
- Abstract
This article discusses the concern of scholar Fisher Ames for social and political equality. Fisher Ames was one of the cleverest and most intelligent of the spokesmen who argued for a social and political circle which was quite untouched by the new French liberalism of the late eighteenth century. Being content with the habitual and the familiar in life, it was also natural for him to be mightily concerned that the future should be like the past, in much the same manner that one generation of oysters is like the other. To Ames, therefore practically any change was anathema.
