- Abstract
The article focuses on the efficiency of regionalism to improve the economy in East Asian countries and its ability to open its economies to international trade and investment. Since the financial crisis in 1997 and 1998, regionalism emerged in East Asia as a new component in its development paradigm. Country leaders believed that regionalism is an effective way to address some of the adverse effects of globalization. With its strategy, bridges are starting to be built across the sub-regions such as the free trade agreements (FTAs) between South Asia and East Asia. Moreover, the strategy will improve the medium and long-term economic outlook for the region and enhance the region's resilience to external shocks.
