- Abstract
Many studies show a massive deterioration in the mental state of children and adolescents during the Covid-19-pandemic. In particular, depression and anxiety disorders increased significantly. This increase was more pronounced compared to that among adults. In addition, the social pressure on children to adapt during the lockdown phases was enormous. It is known from poverty research that the social context is crucial for mental health. Poverty contributes to mental distress, even if the causality cannot be clarified. In addition, income inequality is growing in Austria and the concentration of wealth is enormous. In the first part of the study, I review social challenges for children during theCovid-19-pandemic. In the second part, I study material factors such as income and economic policy measures on children’s psyche and life situation. And in the third and final part, I argue for an Adlerian approach of encouragement. Here, psychotherapeutic work must pay more attention to the social background of the patients and their families.
