- Abstract
The article focuses on a roentgenographic study done to determine the prevalence of elongated styloid process and ossified stylohyoid ligament in adults in Brazil. It states that the abnormalities in the ossification of different parts of the branchial arch, called the Reichert's cartilage, may cause mineralization of the styloid process or the stylohyoid ligament, giving a variety of radiographic patterns of ossification. According to the study done on 1,056 patients, 10.2% had characteristics of elongated styloid process and 8.7% displayed elongated styloid processes without ossification of the ligament. It suggests that because the stylohyoid ligament originates as cartilage, it retains some cartilage within it, and therefore has the potential for varying degrees of ossification.
