- Abstract
In Turkey, a standardized examination system is implemented for the transition to secondary education, which is the educational level following primary education, and one of the factors affecting success in this process is reading proficiency. Whether 8th-grade students have acquired reading habits before transitioning to secondary education and the adequacy of their readings until the 8th grade are crucial. Furthermore, what students read is as important as acquiring the habit of reading. For a long time in our country, the recommendation was centered around the "100 Essential Books"; however, the termination of this practice has left a void in this regard. This study aims to evaluate the general reading habits of 8th-grade students, assess the adequacy of their past reading levels, and determine which works should be read other than the recommended 100 Essential Books based on the opinions of Turkish language teachers. The study utilized interview and content analysis methods. Research data were collected using a semi-structured interview consisting of three questions based on expert opinions. The sample group of the research comprises a total of 29 Turkish language teachers working in different cities. According to the research results, it was found that 88.89% of the participating Turkish language teachers believed that 8th-grade students did not have reading habits, while 11.11% thought they had such habits. Furthermore, it was concluded that the reading level of students until the 8th grade was deemed insufficient by 94.44%. Additionally, it was revealed that there were numerous recommended works beyond the 100 Essential Books. Based on the research findings, various recommendations were made regarding instilling reading habits in students.
