- Abstract
The contrast in MR images is determined mainly by density of hydrogen nuclei (particularly in water molecules) in the examined tissue and by their relaxation times. MR relaxometry enables quantification of the relaxation times and to study causes of signal changes. Relaxation times reflect not only structural changes of the tissue, but they are very sensitive to the presence of magnetic compounds, such as metals, in the tissue. We demonstrate on a row of experimental and clinical studies, how the relaxation times respond to changes in the tissue and to metal (mainly iron) deposits, which accompany particular pathologies. Although relaxation time changes are often unspecific and their interpretation has its pitfalls, it can be successfully utilized e.g. in combination with other quantitative MR methods for more precise diagnosis determination or hypothesis confirmation.
