- Abstract
"Masculinity in Transition" by K. Allison Hammer is an interdisciplinary book that explores masculinity as a complex gender formation tied to diverse embodiments, subjectivities, identities, sexualities, and ideologies. The book argues that critiques of masculinity must also engage with critiques of white supremacy and capitalism, as these have historically shaped masculinity. Hammer introduces the concept of "unruly alliances," which are texts, discourses, identities, and ideologies that reject traditional configurations of gender and offer queer and trans egalitarian reimaginings of masculinity. The book provides new language and theory to understand the challenges and changes in masculinity, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and appreciating a wide range of masculinities.
