- Abstract
The Stockholm Conference brought to light the geopolitical concern for the conservation and improvement of the environment, the promotion of protected areas, and the incorporation of strategies to reduce the anthropogenic impact on ecosystems. In Colombia, Law 99 of 1993 established the country's protected areas, which play a fundamental role in safeguarding biodiversity. Regional Integrated Management Districts (DRMI) can be inefficient when the Integrated Management Plans do not meet the conservation objectives that support the respective declaration. A spatial-temporal analysis of forest loss from 1991 to 2020 was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the DRMI Las Camelias. The deforestation foci were determined by calculating the Pontius matrix and the landscape metrics of the forest patches between 2016 and 2020. A trend of forest stability and gain was found during the study years, with losses concentrated in small interventions. In the area classified as public use there is a higher intensity of deforestation foci, which follow an aggregated pattern. It was determined that forest gains are associated with small fragments; however, connectivity between forest patches is being affected. The losses and fragmentation of forest cover are associated with the resumption of agricultural activities, which had been interrupted by the armed conflict, and the sectorized forest gains are linked to the different displacement processes and conservation initiatives by CORNARE, the municipalities, and individuals. This project received the support of all the members of the SAGEMA research seedbed, as winners of the "Call For Research, Creation or Innovation Seedbeds at Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Medellín campus - 2021".
