- Authors
Oppenheimer, Margaret
- Abstract
A notebook at the Huntington Library contains a previously unknown inventory of a house occupied by Josiah Hardy, the second-to-last royal governor of New Jersey, while in office (1761–63). The document, transcribed in this article, was drawn up by builder/architect John Edward Pryor—best known as the architect of Proprietary House in Perth Amboy, New Jersey—and Jonathan Brinner, a cabinet and chair maker. The transcription is supplemented by commentary on the people and places associated with the inventory, the ways in which the household goods listed in it were used, and the lifestyles of American colonial governors.
