- Abstract
This article provides an overview of the issue of psychotropic overprescribing to youth, focusing on its prevalence, causes, and potential solutions. The United States has the highest rates of psychotropic medication use among young people, but other countries are also experiencing an increase. The use of antipsychotics and polypharmacy has risen, despite limited evidence of their benefits compared to the risks. Parents often lack awareness of these risks, and concerns exist about drug interactions and the lack of studies on polypharmacy effects. The article also includes research on the overuse of psychotropic medications in youth, with perspectives on ADHD and the need for a more integrated treatment approach. The document is a list of references for a research article on the use of psychotropic medications in children and adolescents, including studies from various countries and guidelines on appropriate medication use.
