Commentary on 'Characterization of acid and non-acid glycosphingolipids of porcine heart valve cusps as potential immune targets in biological heart valve grafts' (by Barone et al.): bioprosthetic products from animal origin are xenotransplantation products with their own regulatory path

- Abstract
The author discusses a research, published within the issue, concerning the characterization of acid and non-acid glycosphingolipids of porcine heart valve cusps as immune targets in biological heart valve grafts. He states that the research illustrates how implantation of xenogeneic decellularized or glutaraldehyde-treated tissue should be considered a xenotransplantation procedure. The need for research of the immunogenicity of porcine heart tissue as bioprosthetic heart valves is suggested.
