- Abstract
This article explores the characteristics and potential functions of extrachromosomal circular DNA (eccDNA) in schizophrenia (SCZ). The study analyzed plasma-derived eccDNAs from SCZ patients and healthy controls using the Circle-seq approach. The researchers identified differential eccGenes in the two groups, including the TAOK2 gene, which was found in the SCZ group but not in the healthy control group. Functional analysis showed that eccTAOK2 could repress the expression of the TAOK2 gene and dysregulate immune-related biological processes in nerve-derived cells. The findings suggest that eccDNA may have a negative effect on SCZ and could potentially serve as a noninvasive biomarker for diagnosis and monitoring.
