- Abstract
The present study aimed at (i) analyzing the effects of age, sex and their interaction on the reading comprehension in a Spanish-speaking population, (ii) analyzing the relationship between verbal skills, attention, executive functions (EF) and reading comprehension and (iii) examining what specific executive processes accounted for unique percentage of variance in reading comprehension above and beyond the variance explained by age, verbal skills, attention and fluency. We worked with a sample of 168 children and adolescents aged 9 to-15 years old. Bifactorial Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA), Pearson correlation and Multiple Regression Analysis (stepwise and hierarchical) were employed. MANOVA results revealed significant effects of age, but not of sex, on fluency and reading comprehension. Correlations analysis showed that reading comprehension was associated with most of the cognitive tasks analyzed. Finally, Regressions analysis indicated that only working memory (i.e., central executive component) and semantic verbal fluency (FVS) explained a unique percentage of variance in reading comprehension after controlling for variance explained by the control variables. The results support the hypothesis that sustain that EF are related to academic performance in children and adolescents and emphasize the importance of considering EF as processes that contribute to reading comprehension.
