- Abstract
In Europe, rural tourism has experienced a stronger development in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, as a result of technical progress in the field of transportation, modernizing railways and roads, but also the automotive and aviation industry. One of the main attributes of rural tourism is its location in regions and areas which have not been exploited by mass tourism. Based on ensuring increasingly high levels of comfort and services and a wider range of activities for entertainment, recreation and leisure, tour operators have begun to attract tourists to rural areas by certain activities (farm visits, studies of nature, cycling, walking, cultural activities, sports competitions). European Union countries (Germany, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, etc.) have encouraged the creation of associations and bodies to promote rural tourism and related services.
