- Abstract
Over the years one can observe an increasing elderly population. In Brazil, this increase is seen in causing major changes in social structure. Thus, it is necessary to think about attitudes that may provide higher quality of life to this emerging population. Aging causes many changes in the body, so keeping active in old age may help to decrease the deleterious effects caused by aging, among them the chronic degenerative diseases, very common at this stage of life. Therefore, this bibliographic study aims to discuss the importance of practicing resistance exercise for seniors. It was observed that aging brings about several changes anthropometric, physiological and neuromuscular therefore healthy aging requires a healthy lifestyle with proper nutrition and regular physical exercise. Thus, we conclude with this research that resistance exercise - weight training can be considered an option for increasing muscular endurance and strength, promoting reduction of falls and thus fractures, ensuring greater safety for the elderly and functional mobility. These benefits will encourage a higher quality of life and independence in performing activities of daily living.
