- Abstract
By using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), we investigated the fragility and thermodynamic properties of the glass transition for binary mixtures of 1,2-propanediamine and NaClO. 1,2-Propanediamine has a large dynamic fragility ( m = 123) and deviates from the empirical correlation between dynamic and thermodynamic fragilities that has been established for many nonpolymeric glass-forming liquids. As a function of concentration, m peaks at the NaClO mol fraction x = 0.20. Also near x = 0.20, the heat capacity jump at the glass transition temperature decreases in a stepwise manner. We suggest that the breaking effect of ions on hydrogen-bonding structure changes discontinuously with ion concentration, and this mixture transforms from a system dominated by hydrogen bonding to a system dominated by solvated ions and, finally, to a system dominated by ion pairs with added salts. This structural change leads to the observed anomalies in the dynamic fragility and in the thermodynamic properties of the glass transition. Raman results for the -NH stretching bands in this mixture are consistent with these DSC results.
