- Abstract
The modern Olympic Games are certainly one of the greatest world sport spectacle and as such the affiliation to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has proven to be one big coveted prize to many 'nation States' (Peacock, 2011a). It is however essential to view the "Games of the Olympiad", the "Olympic Ideal" and the "Olympic Movement", as equally important components that make up and complete the whole. The the Olympic Ideal embodies amongst other things, the "humanist sports policy" and/or the "philosophy Olympism". The latter find expression through the "fundamental principles of Olympism", which underscore the "core Olympic values" of respect, excellence and friendship and the "central pillars of the Olympic Movement" - sport, education, culture and environment. The Games of the Olympiad or the the Sumer Olympic Games, which together with the Winter Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games, are paramount to the work of the Olympic Movement, particularly , their special role of mirroring and promotion of the Olympic values. The Olympic Movement is, under the supreme authority and leadership of the IOC, comprised of the three main constituents, namely the IOC itself; the International sports Federations (IFs) and the National Olympic Committees (NOC's), as well as the Organizing Committees of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (OCOGs) and other Olympic Organizations (such as the Olympic Solidarity, Olympic Truce Commission; the World Anti-Doping Agency etc.). The Games of the Olympiad are indeed vital and famous as they may be; they however remain one component of the "Olympic Movement tripod". Given their popularity and influence the Olympic Games are organised by the IOC, amongst its other various important functions. The latter therefore should play a much bigger role in the lives of the multitudes of people across the world, especially in the 21st century society. Yet, it appears that both the IOC and the Olympic Movement have takem time to fully realise and appreciate this potential. Part of this realisation is shown by a range of vital international gatherings that the IOC, the Olympic Movement and its strategic partners such as the United Nations Educational and Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), occassionaly hold. It would seem that to the IOC, these gatherings are, amongst other things, in an attempt to improve transparency in how it and the Olympic Movement work and an opportunity to engage the various components and more importantly, the "outsider-stakeholder" the general public or the world population. This article therefore aims to outline the history, objectives and the impact of the major Olympic Movement gatherings (conferences, forums and events on the Olympic Movement) on its work and that of the world's sociocultural dynamics. This review article drew its sources from various IOC documents and other Olympic Movement-related publications; and the existing body of academic and non-academic literature that is pertinent to this topic in an attempt to deliver its aims.
