- Abstract
The kinetic of the thermal decomposition of cis-bixin isomer isolated by solvent extraction from the seeds of Annatto have been investigated. The thermal decomposition data of theα-bixin samples were analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis (TG/DTG) at different heating rates in the 25-900°C temperature range. Superimposed TG/DSC curves showed that thermal decomposition reactions forα-bixin occurred in the liquid phase. The kinetic parameters<em>E</em>a(activation energy) and A (pre-exponential factor) were determined using integral and approximate methods: Coats-Redfern (CR), Madhusudanan (MD), Horowitz-Metzger (HM) and Van Krevelen (VK). The results obtained with these methods are in good agreement. F2 mechanism describes well the first stage of the thermal decomposition while F1 model seems to be appropriate for the other stages.
