- Authors
SUZUKI, AKIHITO
- Abstract
The article discusses the epidemiology of smallpox epidemics in early modern Japan, reflecting on the disease's legacy and its impact on modern Japanese public health. It explores various responses to smallpox, noting the role of religion and local customs and suggesting that households and villages played a larger role than domains or the Japanese state. The author explores disease management in isolated areas, commenting on the strategies of fleeing and quarantining. The influence of smallpox epidemics on responses to later cholera epidemics is explored.
