- Abstract
The article present a comparison between podophyllotoxin and podophyllin in the treatment of genital warts. Podophyllin is a resin mixture which can be extracted from the dried rhizomes of differing species of the May Apple ,Berberidaceae. For many years podophyllin was used as an emetic and as a treatment for constipation. However, as maintained by the authors, both podophyllin and podophyllotoxin may cause local adverse effects such as inflammation, oedema and ulceration. Severe systemic toxicity may arise after topical use of podophyllin, most commonly when it is applied in large volumes. In contrast to podophyllin, podophyllotoxin can be readily purified to a solution which has a stable shelf-life.
