An essay is presented which explores the songs of the Germans in Russia. It highlights two categories of songs which include songs about events that affected all German-speaking colonists and songs growing out of the withdrawal of exemption from military services. It is argued that the songs of the Russian Germans demonstrate in a vivid concrete way that Mennonites were not alone in their horror and dismay at the withdrawal of what had seemed like scared privileges.
