- Abstract
The paper presents the sources for the history of the Jesuit Order in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth which are preserved in the Russian State Archive of Old Records in Moscow. The genesis of the most important collection containing Jesuit records is related to the suppression of the Society of Jesus. In 1773 the Commission for National Education was created by the Polish government. Its task was to supervise the school system and administer the former Jesuit estates in the territories still belonging to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth after the first partition (1772). Most of the records of suppressed Jesuit colleges were merged into the archive of the Commission. After the third partition of Poland (1795), the Commission was suppressed and its archive was dismembered by Prussian, Austrian and Russian authorities. The records concerning former Jesuit estates located in the territories annexed to Russia were overtaken by the Imperial government. So far the sources preserved in Moscow have not been exploited by historians of the Society of Jesus. They are particularly valuable due to their complementarity to those preserved in the Roman Archive of the Society of Jesus. Records from the archives of suppressed Jesuit colleges show mainly the economic and social aspects of the activity of the Order. They concern mainly former rural and urban estates during the second half of the 17th century and in the 18th century. Therefore, they enable an inquiry into the relationship between the Jesuits and other social layers, such as nobility, burghers and Jews. Another important part of the collection are the records produced by the Commission between 1773 and 1795, which show the fate of Jesuit estates and former members of the Order in the aftermath of its suppression. Particularly interesting are the inventories of the colleges and their estates written in 1773 by the inspectors sent by the Commission for National Education. These inventories enable a deep insight into the material, intellectual and artistic culture of 18th century Jesuits.
