- Abstract
The study aims to explore the pattern of cleft lip and / or palate in patients from Northern Greece, who received orthodontic treatment at a university clinic, and to report the prevalence of different cleft types and the sex distribution as well as the prevalence of their parent's and grandparent's occupation in agriculture. DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: Secondary and tertiary care, Department of Orthodontics, School of Dentistry, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. PATIENTS: 50 consecutive non-syndromic patients with cleft lip and / or palate registered from '995 to 20'0 at the Department of Orthodontics. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Cleft types, sex distribution and family history of agricultural occupation were recorded. STATISTICS: The data were processed with the statistical software SPSS version 17. Descriptive statistics were used to explore the distribution of cleft types with respect to the gender and to the parents' and grandparents' occupation on agriculture. The statistical significance of the association between cleft types and gender was tested using confidence intervals and analysis of contingency tables. RESULTS: Cleft lip and palate was the most common defect (92%) followed by cleft lip (6%) and cleft palate (2%). Left-sided cleft lip and palate were approximately 1.5 times more common (40%) as right-sided (26%), and more males were affected by cleft lip and palate than females. There are indications that males were significantly affected by left-sided cleft lip and palate (chi-square p=0.044, Fisher p=0.065). Independently of cleft type, it was found that 66% of the total numbers of cases with information concerning grandparents from father's side were farmers. On the mother's side 48% of fathers and 50% of mothers had agricultural occupation. CONCLUSIONS: The cleft lip and / or palate patients' characteristics observed in this exploratory study, do not present differences from other populations.
