- Abstract
The article focuses on how elementary school teachers perceive the effect educational policies have concerning science instruction with their English language learners. The article examines a questionnaire and interviews of elementary teachers in urban school districts in the southeastern U.S. It suggests teachers' opinions changed as the state enforced accountability during the period of the study. The teachers seemed positive concerning standards but were more negative concerning statewide assessment and accountability measured via reading, writing, and arithmetic. The article suggests that we must understand teachers' perceptions concerning the influence of policies, especially those concerning English language learners, as accountability becomes more of a priority.
