- Abstract
Although insignificant correlations between infant mental development and later intellectual skills might discourage further research on infants, perhaps the data merely indicate the need for a shift in focus from research on the isolated infant to research on the infant's interactions with his environment. Evidence that early experience influences the child's language skills and academic competence suggests the need for continued study of infants' interactions with their social environment. Evidence is accumulating that a socio-ecological developmental analysis of the interaction of the infant with his environment will contribute to understanding of and to intervention in child development.
