- Authors
Cook, Susan E.
- Abstract
Presents literary criticism of the novel "The Nether World" by English author George Gissing, which was published in 1889. Gissing's feelings on the degree of realism in literature during the late nineteenth century are discussed and the author considers how successful Gissing is at making "The Nether World" a social protest novel that is performative, a theatrical spectacle, and photorealistic. The "depressing" tone of Gissing's novels is discussed as is the lack of optimism in his books.
