- Title
Lasting First Impressions: Printed Incunabula East and West.
- Authors
SILVERMAN, RANDY
- Abstract
The article discusses the From Jikji to Gutenberg project, which aims to redefine the understanding of the invention of metal type printing. It challenges the commonly accepted notion that Western printing history began with the Latin term incunabula, which refers to books printed between 1455-1500, by highlighting Korean records that indicate metal type printing originated in the 1230s. The project utilizes advanced scientific and scholarly methods to accurately chronicle the global development of print technologies. It also plans to hold an exhibition in one hundred cultural institutions internationally to celebrate the 650th anniversary of the printing of Jikji, inviting the public to engage with the history of printing through various activities and demonstrations.
